That X-Meridian is looking pretty auzentdch. Linux is capable of passing through digital audio to an audio device like an AV receiver or a surround sound processor.
The problem or at least the first oneis the front channel DAC. Auzentech X-Fi Forte 7. OpenAL does not have it.

HT Omega also sells a Claro with a built in headphone amp, might be worth checking out. XFi [Creative X-Fi], device 0: BB code is On. The front pannel for the Forte is nice too, but many cases come with front pannel options these days.

However, I can't truly pass judgment on any C-Media-based card since I've never used one and have no intention to buy one.
